Samsung SmartThings and Google Join Forces to Enhance Smart Homes With Nest Integration

New integration allows SmartThings users to control Nest devices

Today we announced a partnership with Google, bringing the company’s portfolio of Nest products into SmartThings, one of the largest IoT ecosystems. Through the integration, Google Nest devices, including thermostats, cameras and doorbells, will be “Works With SmartThings” (WWST) certified, allowing users to seamlessly control their smart homes through SmartThings.

For the first time, SmartThings users will be able to adjust a Nest thermostat, view live camera feeds from outdoor Nest cameras and hear who is at the door with Nest Hello, all through their smart devices. SmartThings users can also incorporate Nest devices into their current WWST-certified devices to create Scenes and automated experiences, controlling the functions with simple voice commands or through the SmartThings app. Soon, users will be able to stream right from their Nest devices directly to their Samsung TV or Family Hub fridge.

SmartThings technology powers endless possibilities for enhancing everyday life. Scenes can seamlessly adjust the lighting. Automations can signal to a Nest thermostat when it’s time to adjust the temperature or if a window is open. It can set the optimal temperature for a baby’s nap or even a home alone pet, taking into consideration details such as its fur length. Users can also activate outdoor and indoor lights ahead of arriving home.

“SmartThings technology continues to enhance and improve the way we experience smart living. We’re pleased to further strengthen our partnership with Google and integrate Nest into our portfolio to offer users more ways to control and automate their home,” said Ralf Elias, Global Vice President IoT / Business Development & Partnerships at Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to creating a universal system where all smart home devices can work cohesively together.”

Following the recent SmartThings IoT integration with Mercedes-Benz, this partnership with Google represents the next step in SmartThings’ commitment to technology innovation and to working with third parties to create a universal smart home standard. The company is focused on simplifying smart technology development for manufacturers and increasing compatibility for consumers.

SmartThings technology will be available on Google Nest products starting in January 2021.

Your routines, even smarter

A smart home should be a dynamic home that can adapt to everyone’s needs. SmartThings Scenes gives you the opportunity to create customized scenarios within a routine, to create an intuitive smart home experience based on you!

How it works:

Scenes are the best way to control a group of lights to create the perfect mood for any room in your home. You can group multiple bulbs, switches and outlets in a single Scene. For example, you can dim one bulb, change the color of another, and turn off a switch at the same time with a single command.

With the launch of scenes for SmartThings, you can do more with smart lighting in your home by instantly activating customizable lighting actions for multiple lights at once. A Scene is like a routine – only better. With a Scene you can create “Homework Lighting” within an “After School Routine” that starts at 4pm when the kids come home. Your color tunable smart bulbs can be programmed to be bright white during that time of day in the kitchen, den, and dining room – all at once – for ultimate concentration. At sundown, a Scene can activate warmer lighting for optimal relaxation during a “dinner time” routine. Scenes can be triggered via app or voice, so when life hands you those moments where you need to be hands free (‘dinner time’) you can still set your lighting to your preferences through Scenes.

What if you need lighting even more customized? With Scenes, you are able to create a Bedtime Scene to turn off your bedroom’s ceiling lights, turn your night light on, and set its color temperature to warm white. Not a morning person? Set a Wake Up Scene to change the color of your bedroom bulbs and use a Good Morning Routine to activate the Scene automatically.

The Next Generation of SmartThings is Here

We’re excited to announce that the next generation of the Samsung SmartThings Hub, a new lineup of products, and a brand-new SmartThings app experience is available today.

Our mission has always been to create the easiest way for people to turn their home into a smart home. In fact, we started SmartThings out of a desire to know the answer to a basic but deeply personal question: is everything OK in my home.  We believe our latest product evolution delivers on this ambition.

Here’s a look at what’s new and improved:

The New Samsung SmartThings Hub and Sensors

The new Hub enables video streaming, has battery backup that lasts up to 10 hours, and can run certain functions locally to improve performance and continue to operate without an internet connection.

The Hub will continue to support ZigBee, Z-Wave, and local internet connected devices. Two USB ports and embedded Bluetooth will support future expansion.

The new collection of Samsung SmartThings sensors are now smaller and have been redesigned with a sleeker, more contemporary look to fit seamlessly into the background of your home.

The New SmartThings App Experiencephones-on-phones

The free SmartThings app has been redesigned for easier navigation and a more intuitive experience.  You can now directly organize and control your connected devices by room, view live streaming from cameras, quickly set up and run routines, explore the marketplace of nearly 200 devices now compatible with SmartThings, and so much more.

One of the exciting new features of the SmartThings app experience is Smart Home Monitor– an integrated home monitoring solution. Smart Home Monitor allows you to receive alerts and take action when SmartThings detects unwanted entry or motion, smoke or fire, leaks, or other important activity. Existing customers will be able to configure Smart Home Monitor from their dashboard within 24 hours after downloading the updated app.

With Smart Home Monitor, our Hub version 2, and a connected camera, you can also get instant alerts with an accompanying video-clip when these unexpected events occur.  Video buffering in the new hub means clips can start prior to the event so you can see exactly what is happening in your home. Video clips will eventually be a premium feature within Smart Home Monitor but are available in beta as a free trial through 2015. After the free trial, a premium version of Smart Home Monitor, which includes video clips, will be available for $4.99 per month. Live streaming will always be free.

The new SmartThings app will be available for free download on iOS and Android starting today, with Apple Watch, and Gear S apps to follow. Be sure to check out our post for a more in-depth look at the app’s new features.

We would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to our customers, supporters, and developer community. Your commitment, feedback, and ideas are what make our open platform truly special. We hope you you enjoy the new SmartThings experience.
