Secure your SmartThings app with Fingerprint Authentication and Touch ID

At Samsung SmartThings, we take pride in our emphasis on security and we are happy to announce that Fingerprint Authentication and Touch ID are now available in the SmartThings mobile app.

Why use Fingerprint authentication or Touch ID?

Fingerprint Authentication and Touch ID provide you with a simple and secure solution for verifying your identity without the need to enter a PIN or password every time you open the SmartThings app.

How does it work?

After enabling Fingerprint Authentication or Touch ID, your fingerprint will be required to “unlock” the SmartThings app if you haven’t opened it in a while. If your phone gets into the wrong hands, you can have peace of mind that a stranger cannot access your Smart Home. If your children tend to get curious when playing games on your phone, rest assured that they will not be able to open SmartThings and start a light show in your living room when you’re not looking.

If your phone’s fingerprint scanner is unable to identify your fingerprint, all is not lost! You will be required to sign in to the SmartThings app using your SmartThings or Samsung account to regain access.

Can I use it now?

Yes! If your phone has a fingerprint scanner and supports Fingerprint Authentication (Android) or Touch ID (iOS), you can get started right now! For step-by-step instructions, see our support guide for Fingerprint Authentication and Touch ID.

Smarten up your Valentine’s Day

Scrambling to come up with an idea for Valentine’s Day? Make this one extra special with the help of SmartThings! Even if you aren’t home to greet them, SmartThings can welcome your honey home on Valentine’s day with a series of romantic surprises!

First, make sure there is a SmartThings Arrival Sensor or Mobile Presence device added to notify SmartThings when your loved one arrives. Alternatively, use a SmartThings Multipurpose Sensor so SmartThings will know when they open the door. Then, create a Routine that will greet them with lights, music, and more!

For step-by-step instructions, see: How to create and edit Routines.

Take your mood lighting to the next level and use Philips Hue bulbs with SmartThings to turn on the romantic lights as soon as your sweetheart enters a room or walks up the stairs. Use Smart Lights to turn on your romantic Hue lights, choose a color, or set the dim level to really set the mood!

Now that lighting is handled, why not warm up dinner too? Use a Smartpower Outlet with a crock pot to heat your food as soon as your better half arrives! Add one more Smartpower Outlet and you can also turn on a prepared essential oil diffuser for a delightful, relaxing aroma.

For help creating new Smart Lights automations see our Smart Lights Support Page or chat with our helpful Support team.

Let’s not stop there, what about music? Use Mood Music and a SmartThings-connected speaker to play a love song playlist to serenade your loved one with the sweet sound of music.

See our support page on how to control Sonos Speakers for steps on how to automate your connected speaker.

Arlo on the SmartThings platform

arlo_email

In case you missed it, SmartThings is happy that Netgear’s Arlo Wire-Free camera is now on the SmartThings platform. Arlo is the only wire-free, indoor/outdoor, motion sensor camera on our platform.

Add Arlo Wire-Free cameras to your SmartThings Smart Home Monitor to provide full visibility inside and outside your home, trigger video clips when something unexpected happens (like your teen coming home after curfew); or view live video from your Arlo cameras in the SmartThings app.

With SmartThings and Arlo, trigger lights to turn on and run a “Welcome Home” (or any other) routine when motion is detected by the Arlo camera.

The versatility of Arlo with the power of SmartThings is a leap forward for the smart home.

Upcoming—New App Authentication Measures

blog-app-update-082816-2

The safety and security of your home are fundamental to our mission at SmartThings. Starting September 15, 2016, the latest versions of the SmartThings mobile app will begin using new authentication measures to help keep your home private and secure.

While this change should go mostly unnoticed, you will be logged out of the SmartThings mobile app the first time it is opened after the update.

The new version numbers of the SmartThings app that contain this change are:

  • Android: 2.2.0
  • iOS: 2.2.0
  • Windows Phone: 1.6.2 (coming soon)

If you or your shared users forget to open the SmartThings app right away – don’t worry! Features like mobile presence that run in the background will continue to function. We do recommend updating the SmartThings mobile app as soon as possible to avoid any loss of functionality and to increase security.

If you do not update, as of December 6, 2016 you will be automatically logged out and unable to log back in until you update the app. Remind any shared users to update and log back in before that date to ensure their automations continue to run correctly.

Please note that if your phone is incompatible with SmartThings (Android OS less than 4.0 or iOS 8.1 or prior), you will be unable to receive this update. As of December 6, 2016, incompatible phones will no longer support the mobile app and you will be unable to log in.
We appreciate your understanding while we implement this improvement. If you have any questions, please contact support via phone, chat, or email!
