SmartThings on a Chromebook

We’re not wearing a hat… but if we were… we’d tip it to @Spike112303 for customizing his SmartThings setup so that he’s able to run it on his Chromebook.

Well done, sir. Well done.

So how’d he do it? @Spike112303 writes: “Use ARChon packager on phone. Save zip, extract, upload as an extension into chrome. Must have 1 stock app (evernote).”

Have you customized SmartThings in a new or unusual way? Drop us a line to let us know, and we’ll highlight it on the blog!

  1. Also works as a Chrome Browser App/Extension on Windows… Love it!

    • I just tried this on my Windows 7 machine and couldn’t get it to work. All I get is the ST logo and nothing else. Any pointers?

      • Hi Pete,

I get the startup logo you’ve depicted for quite a few seconds, but then the app successfully executes. I am on the Beta channel of Chrome (current Version 38.0.2125.101 beta-m), and Windows 7 Ultimate SP1. The SmartThings App version (ported from Moto X Android 4.4) is Version 1.6.5 Build Number 1650.

I will be testing installation on a couple of other PCs (one is on Windows 8) to see if I have continuing success.

I don’t know if the Chrome-Android-Java runtime has any logging / debugging features that might help to narrow down the problem. Not sure how many environmental factors are involved.

I recommend discussing this through the SmartThings Community Forum (you can find me there as @tgauchat or CosmicPuppy) and there are also quite a few other people who would love to help (or who share the same problem in some form or another):

  2. This is still not supported on the latest stable version of Chrome OS ver 53 with the Chromebook Flip. Other apps seem to work fine but SmartThings app does not. I was also able to hack it on to my chromebox but you can not currently load it. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6ddf0e8ab8cfe4dd5d7b52cb90f3d4b2fd609f55db86619ab6c8e5ed42dc8b9c.png
