2 New SmartApps
One of the most powerful parts about the SmartThings open platform is that it brings together developers from our growing Community who create new ways to use SmartThings, and consumers who want to use them. When these developers create and submit new platform applications, or rulesets — what we call SmartApps — we’ll publish them in the free SmartThings app for all customers to find and use.
Today, we wanted to highlight two brand-new SmartApps that were created by Brian Johnson, a member of the SmartThings Community. These two new SmartApps are now available in the SmartThings app for anyone to use.
1. Door Knocker
Created by: Brian Johnson
Whether you have a big home, a quiet doorbell, or you simply don’t often hear when people knock on your door, this SmartApp will make your life a lot easier.
Door Knocker works with the SmartSense Multi sensor (which detects both vibration and when things open or close) to send you a push notification or text message if someone knocks on your door, but not if they open it.
The reason this is useful is that every time a door with a Multi sensor on it opens, it actually also detects vibration. But by customizing the Multi to only send you a heads up when there is vibration and not if the door opens, you can know when the person at the door is a visitor versus a family member.
To set it up, you’ll need to put a SmartSense Multi sensor on the inside of the door that you’d like to monitor. To access Lock It At a Certain Time, tap the “+” icon from the SmartThings Dashboard to go to SmartSetup. Then, scroll to the right until you see the “More” header. You’ll find Door Knocker in the “Convenience” category.
2. Ready for Rain
Created by: Brian Johnson
“The weather is a fickle, fickle mistress.” – Shakespeare, maybe
Here’s the thing about weather: It can change at any moment, and you’re not always back home to react to it. That’s where this handy SmartApp comes in.
Ready for Rain will check the local forecast in your Zip Code (done via the built-in weather API) and send you a push notification or text message if your doors or windows are open when inclement weather is approaching. This way, you can call a family member, neighbor, or even head back home in time to prevent water, hail, or whatever else the heavens throw at you from entering your home.
To set it up, you’ll need to have either a SmartSense Multi sensor or a SmartSense Open/Closed sensor on the door(s) or window(s) that you’d like to monitor. To access Ready for Rain, tap the “+” icon from the SmartThings Dashboard to go to SmartSetup. Then, scroll to the right until you see the “More” header. You’ll find Ready for Rain in the “Convenience” category.
